How do I properly set up my pc to my hdtv with a vga cable while finding the right resolution?

Brian asked: I have my computer hooked up with just a vga port on the back of my hdtv (720p tv). But the only problem I have is finding the right resolution, the one i think is right always cuts of the side of the screen and I don’t know how to fix it.
